Some of these towns have notorious histories, such as the murderer who founded a village and the town that robbed its own citizens. Some succumbed to tragedy, including one that was swallowed up by the water and a resort town that disappeared. Others were simply absorbed by another state. Local historian and author of Hidden History of Monroe County, Michigan, Shawna Mazur collects the stories behind these vanished communities, revealing where these towns were located, how they grew and why they disappeared, often without a trace.

Author Biography

Shawna Lynn Mazur was born and has lived in Monroe all her life. She has a bachelor's degree in history and literature. She has had an article published in Michigan History Magazine and wrote a book for the National Park Service, where she works at River Raisin National Battlefield Park. This is her second book for The History Press, having written Hidden History of Monroe County, Michigan in 2022. Shawna lives in Carleton, Michigan, with her husband, Joseph Mazur, and their two dogs, Callie and Cassie.
