Lord of the World - Paperback
by Robert Hugh Benson (Author), Mark S. J. Bosco (Introduction by), Michael P. Murphy (Introduction by)
Few novels are praised by three popes--yet Lord of the World has been recommended by Leo XIV, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis for its hauntingly prophetic vision. More than a century after its 1907 publication, Robert Hugh Benson's dystopian masterpiece speaks with startling relevance to our secular age.
Written by the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury--whose conversion to Catholicism shocked England--this groundbreaking novel imagines a future in which faith has all but vanished, replaced by a seductive global humanism. As a charismatic leader, Julian Felsenburgh, rises to power promising unity and peace, the last remnants of the Church face mounting persecution. Standing firm is Fr. Percy Franklin, whose courage and clarity set the stage for an unforgettable, apocalyptic confrontation.
Long before The Hunger Games, Divergent, Love in the Ruins, or The Road, Benson imagined a world just as dark and compelling--one that combines vivid storytelling with striking theological insight.
This edition offers fresh context for contemporary readers, including an introduction by Rev. Mark Bosco, SJ, a concise biography of Benson by Martyn Sampson, and a theological reflection by Rev. Michael Murphy, SJ. Whether you're discovering Lord of the World for the first time or returning to its chilling pages, this edition illuminates why it continues to resonate--and why it matters now more than ever.
Back Jacket
Few novels draw the praise of three popes, yet Leo XIV, Benedict XVI, and Francis have all urged the faithful to read Lord of the World for its hauntingly prophetic vision. More than a century after its publication, it remains strikingly relevant.
One of the earliest dystopian novels of the twentieth century, it imagines a future where faith collapses under an aggressive secular humanism. Believers fall away, clergy defect, and only a small remnant endures. Into this vacuum rises Julian Felsenburgh--mysterious and charismatic, promising global peace at the price of total obedience.
Standing against him is Fr. Percy Franklin, a steady and courageous witness as the Church crumbles around him. As the world races toward its final reckoning, Benson's gripping narrative brings these two figures into a dramatic, apocalyptic confrontation.
Prophetic and unsettling, Lord of the World remains as urgent now as ever.
