A resident of Roanoke Island, Schurr is a board member of the Outer Banks History Center and the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum. His wife, KaeLi is the curator at the OBHC. He is at the center of everything related to the Civil War on the Outer Banks. Pullen is the author of two books on the Civil War on the Outer Banks, including Portraits of the Past: The Civil War on Hatteras Island.
