Mobley has worked with the Division of Archives and History of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, serving as archivist, historical researcher, records analyst and historical publications editor. Until his retirement, he served as editor in chief of the North Carolina Historical Review. Currently, he teaches courses in North Carolina history at both graduate and undergraduate levels for NC State University and Louisburg College. He has published several works of history, including Weary of War: Life on the Confederate Home Front and The Way We Lived in North Carolina, for which he won the 2006 North Caroliniana Book Award. His articles and book reviews have been published in a variety of respected journals, including North Carolina Historical Review and the Alabama Historical Quarterly.
